Fgura United FC vs Attard 1-1

The first round came to an end with another positive result, when our lads held promotion challengers Attard to a 1-1 draw. Darmanin fielded the same starting line-up as the victorious one against Qrendi. Attard were the better outfit in the first 30 minutes dominating play but their shooting was erratic with keeper Farrugia having to come to the rescue twice, turning to a corner an insidious shot and blocking to the side another attempt. On another occasion, the ball was cleared on the line to safety by our defenders. Despite this dominance, the most open scoring chance of the half fell to Spiteri who on the break managed to turn around the keeper but chose to shoot with the outstep of his right foot rather than having a try with his left.

Attard took the lead thanks to a majestic freekick minutes in the beginning of the second half. Fgura’s reaction was admirable and they began sharing exchanges and creating good scoring opportunities. In one of these attempts, Rodney Galea found the top right corner of the net with a fine shot from outside the area. Fgura could have snatched all three points but Daniel Said’s shot missed the target by inches and Clayton Garzia failed to connect from close distance a pass from an inviting Clint Ellul freekick, the latter having giving another sterling display, in his new role as libero.
