Despite having to cope with numerous defections, our boys trounced Mtarfa to the tune of 5-1. Coach Darmanin had to do without the services of Clint Ellul, suspended, Jason Gauci, Mark Sammut, Clayton Garzia, Daniel Said all unfit. The coach took the opportunity to give debut to youngsters Sean Desira and Darren Azzopardi while experienced Patrick Muscat made a welcomed return after a long layoff. Vince Testaferrata and Ivan Pace were recuperated from the last victorious outing against Mdina Knights. Fgura had a flying start and after Matthew ‘Sunny’ Spiteri squandered a sitter in front of goal, his long distance effort soon after, was turned against the crossbar by the keeper, with nimble Mark Ellul being the first on the ball to put the ball in the net. Few minutes later Ellul served ‘minor’ Thomas Butterworth with a fine ball who lobbed over the keeper to make it 2-0. This was his first goal in the Senior team. Mtarfa reduced the arrears in one of their rare forays upfront when catching our backline flat, claiming that our opponent was in an offside position. In the second half, Mtarfa’s pressure lasted only a few minutes with Fgura soon taking control of the match dominating the last quarter. Ivan Pace scored a stunner when controlled a cross, made space for himself outside the box and letting loose a low shot beating the keeper on his right. This was his second goal in Fgura’s colours. Mark Ellul made it 4-1 soon after when his first shot was blocked but again was the first to react to slot home. The last move was a neat move from the two youngsters who were making their senior team debut and who had just entered the fray. Darren Azzopardi ran down the right flank and crossed towards Sean Desira, who made amends for an easy chance missed a few minutes earlier, by beating the keeper for the fifth time. With this win, Fgura are temporarily in the second place of the table.
