Fgura United F.C vs Mtarfa F.C 2-0

Centenary Stadium 21st October 2007 - 16:00

This section is turning out to be keenly contested. Mtarfa still pointless proved to be a hard nut to crack but Fgura are also to blame as in the first half with a very strong wind blowing in our favour, squandered a good six chances in front of goal and in the second half they had to put up the barricades to keep the Mtarfa forces at bay.

Clint Ellul was missing from the team through injury, with Matthew ‘Sunny’ Spiteri making his season’s debut. Ivan Cassar was reinstated with the first eleven down the left flank.

Spiteri was the first one to test Mtarfa’s extreme defender and as the half progressed Mark Ellul, Rodney Galea (in more than one occasion) and Clayton Garzia all had their goal scoring opportunities that went begging. However in the midst of all this goal-mouth activity, Clayton Garzia did manage to find the net from close range.

Keeper Rainier Farrugia was almost inoperative in the first period but had to be on the alert through out the second period. Besides the wind, an icy rain began to fall making the equilibrium of the players more precarious on the slippery wet surface. Farrugia had to turn to a corner with the aid of the post an akward long distance shot and from the resulting corner Mtarfa again hit the woodwork. Farrugia then produced a miraculous save from a close range header. Fgura could have eased the pressure but Mark Ellul failed to find the net.
