The Under 16’s were seconds away from denting the 100% record of team leaders Lija/Iklin losing by the odd goal in three in a game were the boys gave a good account of themselves and defended diligently throughout the match. Bianco in goal was outstanding and libero Abela played the role like a veteran. Industrious Saffrett was excellent in the engine room with the other boys playing their heart out.

Fgura took the lead when an angled Abela freekick hit the far upright with Saffrett the quickest to react to send home. Fgura managed to keep the goal advantage by the end of the half, with Lija being the most menacing from corner kicks and forays from their midfielders. The had also a goal disallowed for offside.

In the first attack of the second half, Lija equalized when their player managed to find some space on their right and curled a shot past a hapless Bianco. Lija pressed for the winning goal but Fgura absorbed the pressure and attempted some counterattacks which some of them were squandered because of lack of precision in the final telling pass. Lija had another goal disallowed for offside but two minutes on time managed to find the net when two players managed to elude our backline and score albeit the courageous’ Bianco’s desperate attempt to keep the ball out.

It was no to be. Lija bagged the three points by the tip of their fingernails!
