Qormi had to sweat hard to beat a resilient Fgura outfit winning by the odd goal in three. Fgura defended well in the in first half in the small Mellieha Ground and Qormi though aided by a strong wing could not find a break through. Qormi’s attempts at goal in the first half where either off target or else saved without difficulty by Bianco in goal. Fgura’ sorties up front were almost inexistent.

However in the second half, exchanges were shared, with Qormi still more menacing up front. Despite all this, it took a controversial decision by the referee to break the deadlock when skipper Sammut was adjudicated to have handled the ball in the box. Qormi converted the penalty by hammering the ball in the roof of the net. Fgura equalized immediately. Seisun’s insidious freekick was met by Sean Desira, who unmarked placed the ball pass the gk with his outside of his right foot. Desira turned from hero to villain of the situation, when a Qormi fk was deflected by Desira forming part of our wall and thus deceiving Bianco. Late in the game Fgura were served with a golden opportunity to level things up when Pace was tackled by two defenders in the box and the referee opted for the penalty. Unfortunately Sammut’s powerful but central shot was parried by the goal keeper and the danger cleared. It was not to be.

Next week end Fgura will be facing Gzira United in the first round of the Youth B Competition.
