Fgura opened their league campaign with a 1-0 loss to Marsa. Marsa, just relegated from the second division were the better team but only managed to score from a direct free kick.

 

Fgura played with Renald Attard in goal, who is making a return to the fold this season, with brothers Brian and Vince Testaferrata in the heart of defense. Player coach Brian, fielded new signing on loan from B'Kara Carl Calvagna on the rightand returning Ivan Cassar on the left.

 

Daniel Said and other loanee Melvin Pisani from Tarxien mastered things in the midfield engine room, flanked by Rodney Galea and the other new recruit joining on loan from Vittoriosa S, Mark Drago. Up front Clint Ellul returning to the striker role teamed up with Matthew Spiteri, the latter making his seasonal debut.

 

In the second half youngsters Jason Gauci and Lydon Vella entered the fray.

 

Marsa opened up the match in aggressive fashion, testing Attard in goal with Kevin Scerri even hitting the upright from an acute angle. The same player scored the winner in the second half directly from a free-kick. Minutes later Fgura were denied from a cyrstal clear penalty when Clint Ellul was felled by keeper Grima. Ellul had to hobble off immediately.

 

Fgura will face Naxxar L on Thursday in the first round of the Anniversary Cup. Hopefully the other new signing, ex-player Wayne Nappa, roped in from Pieta H, will recover from a fastiduous injury to mark his official seasonal debut.
