Fgura utd. vs St. George's 3-1

Posted on Tuesday 9th January 2010

This was a derby between two teams having team selection problems. In fact the two teams could only field 10 players a piece.

With this win Fgura managed to end a barren pointless run and returned to finding the net again. In fact we took an early lead through Bongailas, returning from a match suspension, who well positioned in the box placed the ball away from the reach of the goalkeeper. Bormla aided by the wind behind their backs, tried to find the equalizer, but their erratic form in front of goal and the state of grace of keeper Buttigieg kept them at bay. Fgura too had a number of counter breaks, but their final passes lacked precision even when in numeric advantage. The side from Cottonera drew level when they were awarded a contested penalty after Scanu was judged to have handled the ball when trying to clear away the ball from a corner kick. Buttigieg almost managed to save the well taken penalty.

In the second period, Fgura restored the lead with two beautiful taken shots from distance; first when Guarracino’s low shot beat the goal keeper on his right side and soon after, Mizzi’s effort sailed over a hapless keeper. Bormla had a chance to claw back in the match, when they were awarded another penalty, more dubious than the first, when their forward visibly simulated having been tripped. This brought protests from the Fgura camp leading to the sending off of skipper Vassallo. Luckily the penalty was shot over the bar.

With a man advantage and against a tiring side, St. George’s were allowed ample space to knit their moves but again Buttigieg aided by his twin brother and an attentive Tabone, managed to secure our two goal advantage. Towards the end Mizzi could have added another for Fgura but his close range effort was blocked to safety by the keeper.
