Fgura Utd. vs Ghaxaq 2-2

Posted on Tuesday 21st April 2009

In a typical end of season match, Fgura without any aspirations faced Ghaxaq still chasing a play-off place. Coach Darmanin fielded a team scattered with youth players five of which started the match.

Regular players missing included Burke, Said, Spiteri, Farrugia and Desira. Warren Bianco played in goal with a back line composed of Felice, Ellul, Testaferrata, Stafrace and I.Pace. In midfield Bordieri, Gauci and Rodney Galea supported C.Pace and Vella upfront. Sean Galea relieved Rodney Galea and debuttant Horace Darmanin substituted Lydon Vella later on in the match.

Ghaxaq opened the score against the run of play through a deflected freekick which bounced awkwardly in front of Bianco. Fgura equalized towards the end of the half when a choral move involving many youngsters ended with Claudio Pace making space for himself in the box and scoring on the first post. Ghaxaq started the second half on the offensive with Fgura coping well with the pressure until skipper Clint Ellul felled an opponent in the box and the penalty was converted with a shot in the middle. This advantage was short lived as Ellul made amends to his earlier misdemeanour, rising high to head home a Bordieri corner.

Player coach Johan Zammit entered the fray for Ghaxaq and this burly centreforward left a positive impact as Ghaxaq pressed for the winner. Our defense held strong thanks to the good saves and blocking of young Bianco and the heroics of the defense led by skipper Ellul and Testaferrata. More was yet to come; Bordieri took the Ghaxaq defense by himself and after dribbling past two defenders was floored just outside the penalty area with the referee reading the situation well sending off the culprit. Instants later, parity was restored as skipper Ellul was shown the second yellow card for kicking away the ball with play halted. The six minutes injury time seemed an eternity but the result did not change.
